Lyra Voss

Quiet, tidal music for piano and strings — written between the city and the sea. The new record Tide Marks is out now, everywhere — eleven pieces, one chapel, and the sea close enough to hear.

Tide Marks

Eleven pieces about water, distance and returning. Recorded in a deconsecrated chapel over one long winter, with the sea half a mile from the door — piano, cello, and the room itself acting as a third instrument.

Tide Marks was written across two years of ferry crossings and winter residencies. Every piece began as a field recording — harbour bells, a failing engine, the hiss of shingle on the turn — and was then rebuilt for the piano. The record keeps one ear on the landscape at all times, which is why it never quite settles.

The album was recorded live in the room, with no click and very few edits. What you hear is, mostly, what happened on the day — including the rain on the roof in Salt in the Floorboards, which the microphones refused to hide.

The cover is a single photograph of the chapel piano, unretouched — the same instrument, in the same light, that you hear across the record. No typography was added; the room is the sleeve.

Produced by Lyra Voss with Marta Eller · Recorded at the chapel, north Devon · Strings by the Halver Quartet · Mastered at Halver & Co.

Low Water, the film

A single continuous take, shot on the coast where the record was written — piano, one room, and the sea doing what it does. One camera, no cuts, and the take that nearly didn’t survive the weather.

05 — About

The long version

Lyra Voss is a pianist and composer who writes slow, precise music — pieces that behave like weather: arriving gradually, lingering, and leaving a mark.

She grew up on the north coast, a mile from the waterline, and learned the piano in a draughty parish hall where the acoustics did half the work. Conservatoire training in London followed, then a decade of scoring independent films and dance works — jobs that taught her to write for rooms rather than for instruments.

Her music sits somewhere between chamber work and ambient — solo piano and strings, built from field recordings and long-form structure. Writers reach for words like silence and patience; she prefers to say the music is written for people who notice the tide going out.

She lives between Bristol and the coast, and works in a converted chapel where the next record — slower, lower, wider — is already under way.

Sessions
Live takes, no click, very few edits — the room plays on every track.

09 — Mailing list

One letter, twice a season

Tour announcements, film drops and studio notes — written by Lyra, sent rarely, and never shared. What lands in your inbox:

Two letters a season at most — one when the calendar opens, one when the record does. If a year goes quiet, so does the inbox.

  • New dates the day they are confirmed, before anywhere else
  • First listens — films, demos and the pieces that almost made the record
  • Studio letters, a few times a year, when there is something worth saying
  • One unsubscribe link in every letter — no dark patterns, ever

10 — Questions

Before you write

How do I book Lyra for a concert or an event?
Write to the booking desk with your dates, city and the size of the room. Every enquiry is answered, usually within a week. A one-sheet and rider go out with the first reply so you have everything in one place. If the date is close, say so in the subject line and the desk will move faster.
Is the ensemble fixed, or can it change?
Programmes can be shaped three ways: solo piano, a piano-and-cello duo, or piano with string quartet. The promoter and the room decide which is right; the music is arranged for all three.
Does she score films and dance?
Yes — features, shorts, documentary and dance are all part of the working year. Send a brief and a timeline to the sync address in the footer, and include where the project is in production.
Can I use her music in my own project?
Synchronisation and master-use requests are licensed through the publisher. Tell them the track, the scene or placement, and the territory, and they will take it from there. Rough edits are welcome early — the music can be shaped to the picture if it is asked for in time.
Where can I buy Tide Marks?
Everywhere you already listen — the streaming links are at the top of the release section. Physical editions are listed on Bandcamp when each pressing is confirmed.
What does the touring setup look like?
One pianist, one technician, and a piano supplied by the venue wherever possible. The full stage plot, input list and tuning notes are in the press kit above.
Do you play private events?
Occasionally, when the calendar allows. Private concerts, launches and listening-room evenings all work — write with the date and the size of the audience.
Can I use the photos on this site?
The press photographs are cleared for editorial use with credit. For anything commercial, ask first — the answer is usually yes, quickly.
What do programmes on the road look like?
Roughly ninety minutes with one interval — pieces from Tide Marks and earlier records, plus new solo work that is still being finished. The set list changes night to night.
Is Tide Marks available on vinyl?
A pressing is planned and will be announced through the mailing list when it is confirmed. Until then, the record lives on the streaming platforms linked above. If you want a nudge on the day the pressing is announced, the mailing list is the place to be.
