On rehearsing in the dark
We ran the second set with only the house lamps tonight. You hear the mistakes faster, and the good parts sound like they belong to someone braver. Keeping it.

Marlowe Quinn writes the kind of songs you find by accident — quiet, precise, lit from below. The new album Paper Lanterns is out now, and the spring tour begins this November.
Eleven songs, forty-one minutes, one long winter
Recorded mostly at night, in rooms with the heating off and the windows open. Paper Lanterns is an album about small mercies: the bus that finally comes, the letter you almost sent, the friend who still answers. Strings were arranged by ear; the piano was out of tune on purpose; nothing was fixed that made the take feel alive.
"I wanted the songs to sound like the hour after the party, when somebody has to say the true thing out loud." — Marlowe Quinn, sleeve notes, Paper Lanterns

A note from the editor — revised each season
Marlowe Quinn did not set out to be a singer. There were years of borrowed guitars, festival campsites and café back rooms first — the slow kind of apprenticeship that leaves fingerprints on everything afterwards.
The songs arrive the same way now as they did at the start: on foot, mostly. Melodies get worked out walking the night bus routes; lyrics are rewritten until the handwriting gives up. The result is a body of work that feels less performed than overheard — which is exactly the point.
Between records, Quinn writes a monthly letter to the fan list. It covers whatever the road has thrown up — setlist notes, the mechanics of a good room, the difference between a choir hall and a barn — and readers often reply that it reads like the album's footnotes. The best of those letters are collected, every few years, into the touring programme sold at the merchandise table.
On stage, the format is simple and unchanging: two sets, a good chair, one lamp, and the songs in the order they need to be heard. Support acts are rare; silence does the opening work. Audiences are asked, gently, to keep phones in pockets — not as a rule, but as an invitation to be in the room they paid to enter.

Nobody could agree whether the record should end with "Small Mercies" or the string room version. We played both for the empty hall and let the silence after each one decide. It was not a close vote.
The room is smaller than the last one and twice as loud. The lamp keeps flickering in the key of the chorus — I have asked the venue to leave it exactly as it is.
A man in the front row knew every word of the B-side. His daughter fell asleep in the second set. I have rarely been so sure the song was working.

The questions that arrive every week, answered once
The spine of the show stays the same, but two or three slots rotate each night depending on the room, the mood and how the bus ride went. Regulars keep a list; the rest of us pretend not to notice.
The evening is built as one continuous arc, and an opening set would break it. Doors open early instead, with the album playing in the room while people find their seats. It is a small ritual and it works.
Lyrics ship with the vinyl and are posted in the monthly letter one song at a time. Chord charts for teaching use are shared on request — write to the press address and ask nicely.
Yes — the vinyl ends with the string room version of the title track, which is not on streaming. The running order is otherwise identical. This is not an accident.
Send the outlet, portfolio and the date you want to cover through the accreditation link in the press section. Requests are confirmed a week before each show.
Fees depend on the occasion, the distance and the room. The booking desk returns a written offer within two working days — no call centres, no middlemen, one honest number.
