Investment philosophy

Four rules we have not broken since 1998.

01

Price before narrative

Every story has a price at which it stops being an investment. We model the downside first and only pay for the upside we can underwrite.

02

Concentrate, then wait

Forty to forty-five positions, not four hundred. Conviction is worth nothing if it is diluted into a tracking error of one basis point.

03

Risk is permanent loss

Volatility is the price of owning equities. Losing your capital for a decade is not a risk we accept to chase a benchmark.

04

Aligned by ownership

Partners hold 31% of the firm's own strategies, with no side vehicles, no soft dollars and no performance fee on unrealised paper gains.

“We would rather sit out an expensive market and explain the underperformance than explain a permanent loss.”

Adrian Vance — Founder & Chief Investment Officer

Strategies

Three mandates. One valuation discipline.

Equity for growth of capital, fixed income for income and ballast, alternatives for uncorrelated return. Most clients blend all three through a single managed account.
