05 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions, answered in one place

From incorporation to year-end — direct answers to the questions founders ask most. Anything else? WhatsApp us.

Still have questions? Ask us directly
Q1How long does it take to set up a Hong Kong company?
With documents in order, registration is usually done within a few working days. Our fully e-signed process means you can complete incorporation from home — no trips to a law firm or the Registry.
Q2What is the difference between a limited and an unlimited company?
A limited company is a separate legal entity and shareholders' liability is capped at their contribution, but it needs an audit and annual return every year. An unlimited company (sole proprietorship / partnership) is simpler and cheaper to run, but the owner bears unlimited liability for debts. Which suits you depends on your risk profile and growth plans — we can help you analyse it.
Q3When does a new company need to start filing tax?
A new limited company typically receives its first profits tax return from the IRD about 18 months after commencing business, and must file by the stated deadline. XLEDGER tracks IRD issue records and reminds you to prepare the accounts early — no last-minute rush.
Q4Does a company with no transactions still need an audit?
Every Hong Kong limited company must file an annual return with the Companies Registry each year. As for audit, even a dormant company must submit an auditor's report under the Companies Ordinance (unless a statutory exemption applies). We confirm your company's status first, then recommend the most cost-efficient compliance plan.
Q5Is it safe to put bank statements in the cloud?
Every file is transferred and stored with AES-256 encryption, access is role-based, and every read leaves an audit trail. The system only touches data you authorise, and files are never routed through third-party platforms.
Q6Is switching accounting firms a hassle?
Not at all. The outgoing and incoming firms exchange accounts and working papers through a professional clearance letter; you only sign a couple of authorisations. We follow up throughout to keep tax deadlines unaffected.
Q7How are fees calculated? Any hidden charges?
Fees are set out in a written quotation before work begins — no hidden charges. The quote defines the scope; if out-of-scope work appears along the way (say, extra audit queries), we get your approval first.
